Our students have an
opportunity to work with state-of-the-art
technology tools thanks to a Technology Literacy
Challenge Fund grant two years ago which created
the Island Children Authoring Network (or iCAN
for short). This grant formed a collaboration
among 3 elementary school classrooms:
- Hualalai Academy 4th
Grade teacher, Patricia Rickey
- Kahakai's Elementary
Technology Coordinator and Gifted and
Talented Teacher, Barbara Woerner
- Kealakehe Elementary
Gifted and Talented teacher, Cynthia
Cieskowski
Project iCAN established
computer publishing centers at the three
consortium schools. Students were empowered to
become authors of innovative, interactive
electronic books using HyperStudio. HyperStudio
is a software program used to develop a series
of cards to produce a stack (or book).
HyperStudio allows authors to be creative with
the multimedia tools and presents problems that
require critical thinking and problem solving.
Students developed art, writing, communication,
and design talents. Students learned to work in
teams and mentor each other to develop their
multimedia skills.
This year if schedules
permit, students will continue to collaborate
with Kealakehe Elementary students by taking
field trips to their computer lab.
